Research & Development

Leather is where innovation begins.

Balma’s research begins with the material itself.
We study leathers, construction methods, finishes, and new processing techniques, with the goal of transforming material innovation into new products.

Material Research

We collaborate with tanneries and specialized suppliers to identify leathers that meet the aesthetic and technical requirements of contemporary collections.

Softness, weight, hand, elasticity, durability, finish, and how the material behaves during production are all analyzed as early as the development phase.

Product Engineering

A creative idea must be capable of becoming a product.

The technical department works on construction, volumes, details, and production sequences to identify solutions that preserve the design while enhancing its manufacturability and repeatability.

Digital Leather Cutting

The TESEO FC4 320 DUAL system introduces digital tools specifically designed for leather into the cutting process.

The goal is to enhance precision, control, and material usage optimization, while keeping the operator’s expertise at the heart of the process.

New Leather Techniques

Balma experiments with new construction methods and techniques applied to leather.

Surface treatments, embroidery, joining techniques, bonding, finishing processes, and structural solutions are developed through testing and prototyping before being incorporated into production.

Training

Knowledge for the next generation.

Innovation also means preserving skills that are at risk of disappearing.

For this reason, Balma supports training programs and collaborations with local schools, universities, and institutions, with the goal of passing on specialized expertise—in areas such as pattern-making, cutting, prototyping, and leather crafting—to the next generation.
